Originating from Broadway, it’s time for New York to laugh their heads off as the musical comedy Book of Mormon will be performing in New York at Eugene O'Neill Theatre on Friday 13th December 2024.
The comedic and sometimes humorously offensive musical Book of Mormon is focused on of two Mormon Elders in training to become missionaries – Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, who are tasked with a mission to a remote village in Uganda to share their faith with its residents. The musical deliberately satirizes religious belief in general through the eyes of the pair, as Cunningham comes up with fact mixed with fiction to teach religion to the locals.
The Book of Mormon was created by Robert Lopez, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone, the same creators of the animated TV show South Park and the Broadway play Avenue Q.

Debuting in 2011, The Book of Mormon has undoubtedly been one of the most successful Broadway musicals since its creation. Conceptualized by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez, the musical was inspired by the Latter-day Saints (LDS) founder and prophet Joseph Smith complete with his Book of Mormon. The show was originally meant to premiere off Broadway at the New York Theatre workshop after its 2008 staged reading, though this turned out to be just a prelude as its actual debut in 2011 moved to a more central location at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre.
In just a year, the Book of Mormon was already greenlit for a U.S. national tour that lasted four years, including a season in Salt Lake City, Utah! The show also carried on to be produced in several locations, with a Chicago production staged in 2012, a West End production in 2013, and Australian and European productions both performed in 2017.
The story and execution of this musical were key elements to this success. It shares the story of Elder Kevin Price and Elder Arnold Cunningham, two LDS missionaries who prepare to preach their faith in a remote village in Uganda. It is there that they contend with the local issues that the villagers face, as well as their opposite methods in teaching their religion, given that Cunningham deceives the villagers by injecting hilarious tales woven from science fiction and fantasy stories into his religious teachings, while Price is determined to teach the villagers in the usual, orthodox manner. The way the musical is shared with the audience is staged in quite an unorthodox manner as well, usually making fun of religion in its script and also injecting comedy in both of its acts, and of course, let's not forget the showtunes!
For its current production, the Book of Mormon will be in New York in December at the central theatre venue of Eugene O'Neill Theatre, which holds an awesome stage, sound system and acoustics, and leading facilities that is fit for this box office hit.
