Originating from Broadway, it’s time for New York to gear up and get ready as the musical comedy Book of Mormon will be performing in New York at Eugene O'Neill Theatre on Saturday 21st December 2024.
The mindblowing and sometimes rude and crude musical Book of Mormon follows the story of two Mormon Elders in training to become missionaries – Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, who are entrusted with a mission to a remote village in Uganda to share their faith with its residents. The play deliberately satirizes religious belief in general through the eyes of the pair, as Cunningham comes up with fact mixed with fiction to teach religion to the locals.
The Book of Mormon was produced by Robert Lopez, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone, the same creators of the cartoon TV show South Park and the Broadway musical Avenue Q.

Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham are two missionaries of the Latter-day saints (LDS) sent on a mission to a local Ugandan village. Their mission is to convert the villagers to their religion, but they learn upon their arrival that their job is more demanding than they had assumed, given the abundance of local issues that the villagers are against such as oppression, an HIV/AIDS epidemic, and poverty among others. The pair then come to accept that they must utilize more unique methods to get through to the locals than the orthodox way that they know.
It is in the pair’s difficult journey where the performance of The Book of Mormon shines – allowing a serious topic of religion to be blasphemed and injected with comedy, showtunes, and a bit of crude language, yet still remaining acceptable to the general public. Since its premiere in 2011, the Broadway play has been received positively despite its manner of sharing its story. The Mormon church itself supported the musical, buying ads and releasing slogans specifically that stated: “You’ve seen the play, now read the book.” In its West End performances, the repeatedly sold-out shows were prime examples of The Book of Mormon’s success. Though most viewers were already expecting a shock given the content and theme of the play, according to The Guardian, it was even to their surprise that “suddenly you realize you’re in for not just humour but a a thought provoking tale that just keeps on getting better.” The musical’s run in Australia met with a similar positive reception, with the Sydney Morning Herald even declaring that the Book of Mormon is a “dynamite production of a show that can lay fair claim to being the funniest Broadway musical of all time.”
It's no shock that because of the musical's creativity, The Book of Mormon’s several productions worldwide have earned it nine Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, three Outer Circle Critics awards, four Olivier Awards, and two Helpmann Awards.
This upbeat, happy, and totally comedic play continues its tour in New York. New York’s premier theatre venue, Eugene O'Neill Theatre, with its spacious seating capacity, magnificent lighting, and magical sound system will be hosting this December’s performance of The Book of Mormon.
