Eugene O'Neill Theatre
Historically famous as one of the favorite theatre venues in New York, Eugene O'Neill Theatre has always been the top choice as a play or show venue, largely because of its impressive interior and exterior architecture that is both practical and beautiful. The Book of Mormon will be available for a limited period in Eugene O'Neill Theatre in December, on Wednesday 4th December 2024.
Legendary duo Matt Stone & Trey Parker, alongside Robert Lopez have once again created another comedy masterpiece but in an entirely new medium for them, this time being in on the Broadway stage. The Book of Mormon, centered on Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, two missionaries of the Mormon faith, embark on a mission to baptize and convert the local villagers of a village in Uganda. The show, despite the risk of offending the church, delves away from a somber approach to sharing this story, as it instead uses comedy and even blasphemy to challenge and question the way religion is taught and religious stories are told.
Audiences globally and for the past decade since its Broadway premiere in 2011 have received The Book of Mormon positively. Despite being rude, foulmouthed, and often satirical, it also comes with a heartfelt message to its viewers beneath its language. Throughout its two acts, the musical perfectly remolds itself from a play full of cursing, adult themes, and profanity to one that challenges and provokes thought. In one of their reviews, The New York Times recognizes this and stated that “The central theme of The Book of Mormon is that many religious stories are silly – the idea that God would plant golden plates in upstate New York. Many religious doctrines are rigid and out of touch. But religion itself can do enormous good as long as people take religious teaching metaphorically and not literally; as long as people understand that all religions ultimately preach love.”
